Plasterers, Drywall Installers
Included in this trade are Plasterers, Drywall Installers and Lathers (who install wall and ceiling frameworks). They can specialize in one aspect of the trade or do them all on commercial or residential construction sites.
Skills include: numeracy; significant use of memory; working with others; physical strength; eye for detail; working with precision tools; creativity; and facing challenges.
Although available certification is voluntary in Manitoba, it is highly recommended. Certification helps you get jobs by telling employers and other workers that you are a skilled professional.
To be certified as a Plasterer/Drywall Installer, you usually need to complete a three- to four-year apprenticeship program. Once you successfully complete the required on-the-job training, technical training and exams, you are awarded a journeyperson certificate.
You may be eligible for certification in some provinces and territories if you have more than three years of on-the-job experience and some high school, college or industry courses for Plasterers/Drywall Installers.
As a certified Plasterer/Drywall Installer, you may write the Interprovincial Exam to qualify for the Interprovincial Standards’ Red Seal. With a Red Seal, you can work as a Plasterer/Drywall Installer anywhere in Canada.
To ensure your skills are current as a Plasterer/Drywaller, you should keep up with new technological developments by reading and speaking with others in the field.
