In Memoriam: Dr Peter Nunoda
It is with great sadness that Manitoba Building Trades Institute announces the death of our friend, colleague, and Executive Director Dr Peter Nunoda. Peter passed May 29, 2023 at the age of 64.
Peter joined as Executive Director of MBTI in July of 2022, bringing with him over 30 years of academic leadership. Peter held an unwavering dedication to MBTI’s mission of Indigenous employment in the construction industry and the success of the institution as a newly established training provider. He was the leader of the MBTI team and his presence will be immeasurably missed.
“Peter’s energy was a calm and happy beacon through some of the toughest times that our organization has faced,” said Tanya Palson, Executive Director of Manitoba Building Trades. “I value the experience and mentorship that he brought not only to myself but each and every one of our staff. His parting is a shock, and we will miss him dearly.”
Originally from London, Ontario, Dr Nunoda earned his B.A. in Honours History from the University of Western Ontario. He also holds an M.A. in History from the University of Windsor and obtained his PhD in History from the University of Manitoba.
Peter’s contribution to Manitoba’s post-secondary education system is felt at institutions such as the University College of the North and the University of Manitoba. He served as President of Vancouver Community College from 2014 to 2019, then as President at Red Deer College from 2019-2021. Retirement had led him home to Winnipeg, where he joined as the Executive Director of Manitoba Building Trades Institute.
A public viewing for Peter will be held Monday, June 5, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Thomson “In The Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB.
A memorial service will occur Wednesday, June 7, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, MB.
